WHAT IS PROPANE?

Propane is also referred to as liquefied petroleum gas, often shortened to “LP gas” or “LPG”. It’s an alternative fuel that’s a by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining. It’s safe, clean, powerful, and reliable—and it’s powering homes and businesses all over the world.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PROPANE?

Propane is an economical fuel option for furnaces, hot water heaters, fireplaces, cook ranges, pool heaters, fire pits, household appliances and more.

Benefit #1. Propane warms up a home more quickly than electricity. It has a higher octane rating than gasoline and a higher energy density than other fuels such as heating oil, offering better heating performance.

For example, a furnace-based electric heat pump supplies slightly warmer air than the human body – around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Comparatively, a propane furnace will consistently deliver air that’s about 115 degrees in temperature.

Propane is also very effective at heating water. An electric boiler may take nearly an hour to heat an entire hot water tank. But, a propane tankless water heater heats water only on demand, which reduces energy usage and provides a solid return on investment.

Benefit #2. Propane is environmentally friendly. Propane burns more cleanly than any other fossil fuel on the planet, including kerosene, heating oil, gasoline, and natural gas. It produces minimal harmful emissions because of its low carbon content, making it a safe choice for home use. And, propane does not adversely affect the environment, contaminating soil or groundwater.

Benefit #3. Propane appliances work even during an emergency outage. If a weather occurrence takes down the power grid, propane appliances will keep operating. And, if you also have a propane generator that converts propane into electricity, any electric appliances will keep humming along, too.

Benefit #4. Propane is safe. Propane tanks can be placed above ground or underground and are resistant to puncturing, leakage, and other issues. While it’s still recommended to use home carbon monoxide detectors, propane reduces the risk of a life-threatening leak.

Benefit #5. Using propane appliances saves money. For example, propane is up to 30 percent more efficient heating water than electric water heaters. And since tankless propane water heaters do not require heating a full tank of water, they are more efficient and less costly over time.
