THE BENEFITS OF HEATING OIL
Many Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula homeowners use heating oil to keep their homes warm and cozy during cold weather seasons. Heating oil is efficient, safe, cost-effective, and cleaner than ever before, especially when paired with the advanced technology of today’s oil furnaces and boilers.
Benefit #1: Home heating oil is safe. It won’t spontaneously combust because heating oil doesn’t burn in a liquid state. And, there’s little to no risk of a carbon monoxide leak.
Benefit #2: Home heating oil is efficient. It burns 300 degrees hotter than natural gas. This means your heating system is more powerful and efficient than some of the top alternatives, such as natural gas and electricity.
Benefit #3: Heating oil systems are durable and long-lasting. A new heating oil system should last for 15 to 25 years, maybe more, if appropriately maintained by experienced technicians. Using NWP heating oil will also help your furnace run smoothly and efficiently, lengthening the life of your system.
Benefit #4: Heating oil is cleaner than ever before. Today’s heating oil burns 95 percent cleaner than in 1970, producing fewer emissions and hydrocarbons. That’s good news for you, your home, and the environment.
THE BIOHEAT ALTERNATIVE
Bioheat is the industry’s official registered name for fuel that’s a blend of ultra-low sulfur heating oil with renewable biodiesel made from organic and recycled products. These products can range from soybean oil, used cooking oils, inedible corn oil, canola, tallow, fats, and algae.
Using Bioheat reduces emissions. By burning more cleanly, Bioheat also extends the life of heating equipment, which means fewer furnaces and boilers in the landfill.
Bioheat’s costs are similar to traditional heating oil; the price difference is typically only fractions of a penny per gallon. And, most major heating system manufacturers accept Bioheat as covered under their warranties for use. So, no changes to your furnace, boiler, or storage tank are required to use it. Bioheat’s performance standards have been approved by ASTM International, which sets industry standards for fuels and lubricants.
KEROSENE
Kerosene is a combustible hydrocarbon liquid used for cooking and lighting fuel to a jet engine and rocket fuel.
Also referred to as “lamp oil,” kerosene was first used to light lamps and lanterns towards the latter half of the 19th century. Kerosene is a more stable fuel option than gasoline and only contains flammable vapors.
Kerosene can also be stored longer than gasoline and is often considered a more user-friendly form of fuel. It’s worth noting that the burning of kerosene fuel results in carbon monoxide production, which means that there needs to be adequate ventilation available if used indoors.
