On behalf of the Virginia Propane Gas Association and NWP Energy, we wanted to take a moment to educate you about a bill currently going through the General Assembly in Richmond. That bill is House Bill 1257: Natural gas utilities; retail supply choice.
What Does HB 1257 Do?
Ensures that all Virginians have access to affordable, reliable, secure, and sustainable natural gas and propane service in Virginia.
Restricts any public entity from enacting an ordinance or resolution or promulgating or imposing any building code, contractual provision, or other requirement that limits, prohibits, has the effect of prohibiting, or prevents residential, commercial, or industrial consumers within their boundaries from acquiring or using natural gas or propane.
Why Is This Bill Necessary?
The campaign to eliminate propane in Virginia and force electrification on customers is not conceptual. In fact, it is well underway. We have seen it building in recent years and in neighboring states.
This legislation protects energy choice, and prohibits municipalities and other public entities from limiting, prohibiting, or outright banning energy sources (such as propane) in homes and business.
Simply put, it could also save you money. The cost to retrofit a single-family home to electric only appliances could cost more than $26,000!
What Can I Do To Help?
Contact your local State Senator and ask them to support HB 1257. This bill has already passed the House of Delegates and is now pending before the State Senate. You can use this link to view who your Senator is – https://whosmy.virginiageneralassembly.gov/. Please take a few minutes to request their support of this important legislation.
Protecting energy choice is vital so that all Virginians have access to affordable, reliable, secure, and sustainable natural gas and propane service. HB 1257 stops the government from forcing electrification and ensures that propane continues to be available in rural and underserved areas, and in times of emergency or severe weather. Help us protect propane access in Virginia by asking your State Senator to vote “Yes!” on HB 1257.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Norm Faulkner
